Geraki

The contemporary area of Geraki is a settlement in the SE of Sparta with panoramic views of the laconic valley of Taygetos. The area’s history reaches back several millennia, and as the findings have shown this place has been inhabited by people nearly 6,000 years ago. The medieval castle of Geraki, with scattered Byzantine churches presents the valuable historical heritage and is similar to the one of Mistra but much smaller. The castle of Geraki is located on the adjacent hill two kilometres east of the village.
The main economic activity of the inhabitants is the cultivation of olives. The high production of table olive and olive oil, which amounts to 1,100 and 1,500 tons respectively, is accompanied by the processing and standardization on the local level. Geraki is one of the most representative areas of Greece because it emphasizes the characteristic position of olives in Mediterranean agriculture and economy.
